Though the Libertad underwent a distinct style change in the mid-1990s, they have always featured the Coat of Arms of Mexico depicting a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus and devouring a snake, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.The reverse depicts two key symbols of the Mexican people: the Angel of Independence and the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Appearing in the forefront, the Winged Victory angel is a historic monument for the Mexican people and is considered the symbol of Mexico City. The Mexican volcanoes pictured in the background of the reverse memorialize the legend of the two lovers from whom they were named. This is one reason the Mexican government has considered using the Libertad as a form of currency tied to the value of silver.
