Heraldic Art medal struck by Robert McNamara via his Heraldic Art Company of Cleveland, Ohio, who wished to provide a series of high quality commemorative coins for collectors after the Mint stopped its commemorative program in 1954. This specific piece was issued in 1973 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Marquette-Joliet expedition. Struck in 0.925 fine silver.

This is issue number 43 out of a "regular issue" series of 60 pieces which ran from 1959 through 1978 (an addition 7 "special occasion" pieces also were struck during this time period). This piece is lightly toned on part of the raised portion of the obverse rim but is otherwise untoned. One of the "very scarce" Heraldic Art issues.
