(1700s) Great Britain Hoxton School Award Medal. 32mm Silver, Holed for Suspension.

There were two schools in Hoxton Square, London, in the 18th Century, and no one is quite sure which school produced this medal. At Hoxton existed from 1699 to 1729. The school seems to have moved after that, but a renewed. Some have speculated that the medal dates to the latter Hoxton Square Academy, as some pieces have been engraved with dates in the 1770s. This is a real possibility.

However, it is just as likely the medals were struck for the earlier Hoxton school and not engraved with dates until the later school period. We also note the similarity between this Minerva design here and that used by Tanner on Jernegan's Cistern medal of 1736.

A design that would have been very familiar to Londoners of the day and prone to be copied. If this is the case, the medals are post-1736. A very intriguing piece that is missing from most collections and not described in either Medallic Illustrations or Eimer. Obv: POR PIETAS FERO / MINERVA. The present example is uncleaned and original and was well-loved by whomever received it. Holed for suspension, well-worn, and slightly bent near the hole. These were likely issued with a hole, as another piece we have seen shows the hole filled and a loop attached to the edge. This item is in the category "Coins & Paper Money\Exonumia\Medals".
